Australia is beginning to reopen, and life-expanding beyond our local neighbourhoods.  The Federal Government has released a national three-step plan to relax the travel and social distancing restrictions that were put in place in March to stop the spread of Covid-19, but as each state and territory ease restrictions in accordance with their own unique circumstances, the details and timeline look very different depending on where you live.

The information below is correct as of 4th June 2020.

QUEENSLAND

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• As of 1 June 2020, Queenslanders have been allowed to travel and holiday anywhere in the state, excluding certain remote Indigenous communities.
• Groups of up to 20 people can gather outside.
• Overnight stays are permitted, and camping and caravan parks allowed to open (under a COVID-safe checklist). National Parks are open, camping bookings are essential.
• Restaurants, cafes and pubs, shops, visitor centres, libraries, museums, art galleries, and historic sites can welcome up to 20 people at a time (adhering to physical distancing regulations).

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• The Queensland border remains closed.

NEW SOUTH WALES

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• As of 1 June 2020, all NSW travel restrictions were lifted, allowing residents to travel and holiday anywhere in the state. All transport methods, including flights, are allowed.
• Groups of up to 10 people may gather outside.
• Overnight stays are permitted, and camping and caravan parks allowed to open (under a COVID-safe checklist). National Parks are open, but check NSW NPWS COVID-19 Update before each visit, and camping bookings are essential.
• Shops, libraries, museums, art galleries, and historic sites may welcome unlimited people (adhering to 4m² per person physical distancing regulations).
• Pubs, cafes, clubs, and restaurants may welcome 50 people at one time (adhering to 4m² per person physical distancing regulations) Alcohol can be purchased without food, but customers need to be seated to avoid queuing at the bar.

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• NSW’s borders have always remained open.
• Interstate visitors and returning residents are not subject to a quarantine period.
• Interstate visitors must comply with the rules of their home state when returning.

 

VICTORIA

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• As of 1 June 2020, Victorians have been allowed to travel and holiday anywhere in the state.
• Groups of up to 20 people may gather inside, or outside (for exercise only).
• Overnight stays are permitted, and camping and caravan parks allowed to open (under a COVID-safe checklist), but no shared communal facilities, except toilets may be in use. Some National Parks are open, including camping but communal facilities except toilets are closed. Check the Parks VIC COVID-19 Updates for the latest status before each visit.
• Essential shops only open, but personal services (hairdressers, nail salons, etc) may welcome 20 people at one time (adhering to 4m² per person physical distancing regulations) and must log customers’ contact details for tracking purposes.
• Outdoor amusement parks and historic sites allowed to open (with 20-patron limits)
• State museums and art galleries remain closed until 27 June 2020.
• Pubs, cafes, clubs, and restaurants may welcome 20 people at one time (adhering to 4m² per person physical distancing regulations) Alcohol may only be purchased with food.

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• Victoria’s borders have always remained open.
• Interstate visitors and returning residents are not subject to a quarantine period.
• Interstate visitors must comply with the rules of their home state when returning.

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• There are no limits on travel in ACT.
• Groups of up to 10 people may gather outside.
• Some national parks open (many remain closed for bushfire recovery work), check gov.au for the latest details.
• Restaurants and cafes, shops, visitor centres, libraries, museums, art galleries, and historic sites can welcome up to 20 people at a time (adhering to physical distancing regulations). Alcohol may only be purchased with food. Bars and gaming remain closed.
• Personal services (hairdressers, nail salons, etc) may welcome unlimited customers (adhering to 4m² per person physical distancing regulations) and must log customers’ contact details for tracking purposes.

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• ACT’s borders are open.
• Interstate visitors must comply with the rules of their home state when returning.

 

TASMANIA

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• This relates to Tasmania’s Stage 2 which will come into effect from 3 pm on 5 June 2020.
• No travel restrictions.
• Groups of up to 20 people may gather outside.
• Overnight stays are permitted, and camping and caravan parks allowed to open (under a COVID-safe checklist). National Parks are open, camping bookings are essential.
• Restaurants and cafes can welcome up to 40 people per dining room. Pubs may reopen, but nightclubs remain closed.
• Shops, personal services, visitor centres, libraries, museums, art galleries, and historic sites may welcome up to 20 people at a time (adhering to physical distancing regulations).

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• The Tasmanian border remains closed

NORTHERN TERRITORY

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• This relates to the NT’s Stage 3 which will come into effect from 12pm on 5 June 2020.
• Territorians may travel throughout the whole Territory.
• All national parks will reopen at noon on Friday 5 June. (excluding Uluru-Kata Tjuta and Kakadu National Parks)
• All restrictions lifted from all businesses, including retail, service, and tourism operations, but physical distancing and hygiene protocols will still apply.

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• Non-essential interstate travellers, including returning residents, can enter the state but are required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• South Australians are free to travel around the state.
• Overnight stays are permitted, and camping and caravan parks allowed to open (under a COVID-safe checklist). National Parks are open, camping bookings are essential.
• Restaurants and cafes, pubs, and bars may welcome up to 80 people (adhering to 1.5m physical distancing and 4m² regulations).
• Shops, personal services, visitor centres, libraries, museums, art galleries, and historic sites may welcome up to 80 people at a time (adhering to 1.5m physical distancing and 4m² regulations).

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• Non-essential interstate travellers can still enter the state but are required to self-quarantine for 14 days, including returning residents

 

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

TRAVEL WITHIN THE STATE

• This relates to the WA’s Stage 3 which will come into effect from 12pm on 6 June 2020.
• Western Australians are free to travel around the state, with the exception of the biosecurity zones in the East Pilbara and part of the Goldfields (but this will be reviewed on 5 June).
• Overnight stays are permitted, and camping and caravan parks allowed to open (under a COVID-safe checklist). National Parks are open, camping bookings are essential.
• All business, including retail, service and tourism operations may reopen (when adhering to 1.5m physical distancing and 2m² p/p regulations)
• Restaurants and cafes, pubs, and bars will be allowed to serve alcohol without food.

INTERSTATE TRAVEL

• The WA border remains closed, except to returning residents, who are required to self-quarantine for 14 days.
