Enjoy many stunning camping areas when travelling in your motorhome
Are you thinking of hiring a Motorhome in Brisbane and wondering where you might go, but don’t want to drive large distances?
We’ve got loads of ideas, however here is something that might suit a family or anyone looking to explore a new area.
Please note if you are planning to travel over school holidays, and are planning on going to popular areas, consider booking the caravan park ahead, if you want to stay at a specific location to avoid disappointment (ie some beach camps)
- Head south and explore northern NSW – mix it up with a few nights at the beach, for example Evans Head is a lovely campground which allows fires and also some of the Northern NSW National Parks through the New England Tablelands.
- There are plenty of walks through rainforest and the surrounding area and activities to entertain the children (like the tree top walk). Some of the NSW national park campgrounds allow fires too.
- Head West – winter is a pretty good time of the year in terms of weather to experience this area (cooler), and particularly after the weather events of the last couple of years will be alive with wildlife and flora
- Depending how far you decide to drive and if you want to mix it with a relaxing holiday, you could head to Goondiwindi (even go via Stanthorpe if you are interested in a bit of wine tasting on the way, plus a beautiful drive)
- Texas is an interesting area to explore, or maybe to Goondiwindi. There’s a great sealed road that runs along the edge of the Dumaresq River and has freedom camping if you are travelling in a self contained motorhome
- Further afield Roma is interesting to spend a couple of days
- There is also an ‘historic’ style camping ground on the west side of Roma about 10km called Meadowbank which is interesting if you enjoy old farm machinery etc
- If you’re heading west and haven’t been up Bunya Mountains before, that is a good detour for a night or two – lots of great walks (short and long), and so many wallabies at dawn/dusk which may interest you if you haven’t seen many in the wild before. It’s usually cold at night time up here, so definitely pack a jacket (this is also the case in many outback areas – lovely days, and cool nights)
- Mitchell is on the artisan basin, so perhaps you might enjoy a soak in the thermal pools – again plenty of camping around Mitchell for you and your motorhome
- Another option is around the Emerald area – just west of Emerald is Lake Maraboon/Fairbairn Dam, where there is lovely ‘discovery branded’ camp ground on the banks of the lake (excellent for red claw if you want to try a pot or two)
- All around this area (travelling north to Clermont etc is stunning scenery, and a good option if you’d like to try your hand at gold panning etc) – also a mines/tours etc you can go into (Blackwater is well set up)
- Cania Gorge near here is picturesque and has excellent walks and is accessible by a sealed road

Seventy Seventy/Agnes Water is excellent if you decide on a Beach holiday, or heading up the coast with your motorhome, and back down the inland route via Cania Gorge
- If you’re heading up the coast and haven’t explored around Noosa too much, there is a great national park there with walks and often a koala sighting (near car park)
- North of Noosa is Tin Can Bay – possible to feed dolphins here in the mornings
- Beautiful drive from Childers to Bundaberg if you are going there including heading to Woodgate which is a lovely place to spend a night.
The beauty of travelling in a self contained motorhome is that you have options when it comes to overnight camping. Spend some in a caravan park enjoying all the facilities they have to offer, spend some in a national park where you will be able to use the on board toilet/shower in the motorhome that you hire, and maybe even a night or two freedom camping in designated areas. There are some areas that allow a campfire too, which always makes for a fun night with the family.
