Mt Bundy Station - a perfect nights stop over with a motorhome rental from Darwin

July 24, 2018

If you are following our Top End travel route, you’ll want to make sure you include an overnight stay at the historic station, where the tropics and Outback meet. Mt Bundy Station is set on the banks of the Adelaide River and is just over an hour drive south of Darwin.

This station is a great stop over when returning your motorhome rental to Darwin. We have been coming back here for years for good old fashioned hospitality.

Mt Bundy Station was one of the first pastoral leases in the Top End. Established in 1911 the original property was 834 sq miles and leased by colourful buffalo hunters. The Japanese bombing of Darwin in 1942 saw the property used by the American forces who set up an airbase on site here for repairing their bombers during the war. After the war, the Station once again became a cattle property. At its peak, the property was 1.1 million acres and carried around 30,000 Buffalo and 20,000 Brahman cattle and still has a lot of war memorabilia dotted around the station.  These days the pastoral lease for Mt Bundy is much smaller and they moved into tourism. There are plenty of places to park up a motorhome rental after leaving Darwin.

During your time at Mt Bundy, you’ll experience a unique station (farm) stay experience.  You’ll love the pool to relax in or perhaps you’ll make friends with the animals that are kept around the old homestead.  Nearby, try your hand at fishing to catch the elusive Barramundi, or just soak up the tranquil setting and its surroundings. WWII history buffs will enjoy learning more about what went on during this period on the station too.

There’s a licenced bar on site and if relaxing around a campfire making new friends sounds like a fun night for you, then you’ll be happy.  Make sure you check directly with Mount Bundy Station for hours of operation as they are sometimes closed for private events.

If you’re travelling in season and want a powered site, make sure you book ahead, otherwise there is usually loads of unpowered camping, unless there is a special event on.

What we love about this spot, is its location as its unique position to explore its surrounds with Litchfield National Park, a short drive up the road, and it even has close enough proximity to Kakadu National Park. However, if you are travelling in your motorhome, then Mt Bundy offers up the perfect night stop over whilst you cruise around the lush Top End.
