National Parks – Australia has over 500 national parks which equates to over 28 million hectares of land that is designated as national parkland, accounting for almost 4% of Australia’s land areas. In addition, a further 6% of Australia is protected and includes state forests, nature parks and conservation reserves.

National parks are usually large areas of land that are protected because they have unspoilt landscapes and a diverse number of native plants and animals. This means that commercial activities such as farming are prohibited and human activity is strictly monitored.

World Heritage areas – In 2005, Australia had 14 World Heritage areas. These are places or areas that UNESCO, (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), has agreed are worthy of special protection because they represent the best examples of the world’s cultural and natural heritage. Some of these, such as Kakadu, Uluru-Kata Tjuta and Purnululu National Parks, are jointly managed by the Aboriginal traditional owners as UNESCO World Heritage areas.

With so many exquisite places to visit in Australia, it makes for a worthy campervan holiday!

If you’re interested in visiting our national parks, then there are few things that are worth knowing.

national-parksWe’re often asked if there is one pass that covers all the National Parks and how much they cost. It’s worth noting that entry requirements, costs (if any) and concessions into the national parks vary depending on which state you are in. Unfortunately, there isn’t a pass that provides access to all the Australian national parks.

For your ease of reference, we have compiled some information for each of the seven Australian states and their entry requirements in a previous blog, that you can read on this link.

If you’re still unsure, you can check out the National Parks website on the Australian Government website here, to find out more in depth details on National Parks and World Heritage areas.
